Shades of Jazz On Noir- Film and Music project

October 19, 2008

The “Shades of Jazz on Noir” film presents excerpts from the classic film noir works of the 1940s and 1950s crafted to express the fatality, passion, and danger created by directors who pioneered the lively lighting techniques and psychologically expressive approach to classic noir. It’s is viewed from the Femme Fatale of those classics creating a fresh and unusual media experience.
This film combines the passion and despondency of classic film noir with the texture and dynamism of modern jazz, resulting in a unique, growth oriented experience for film, jazz and new music audiences.

This highly original project features the Herb Robertson’s Freak Lip Kill Band who will literally plate Jazz on Noir.

A Touch of Noir – Film and Music project

October 19, 2008

A Touch  Of Noir
Film by Ana Isabel Ordonez and François Olivieri.
Music composed by Michiel Braam.
Narrated by Herb Robertson.
Performed by Bad City Band.

“A Touch of Noir” brings about a new music approach to classic film noir history correcting the disembodiment that existed in the original scores, making a dark and ominous dramatic effect. The improvisers will combine blues and swing and some written excerpts with the film “A Touch of Noir” simultaneously. The effect of this live performance will instantly create a score for the film and two separate media experiences or one total experience together. This film has been performed in Europe (Luxembourg, Netherlands) and USA (New York). Film noir and spontaneous music convey an interesting analysis on life’s improvisations.

The American pianist, poet and dancer has been applauded a special breed of artist: brilliant, formidable and controversial, he has it all: the whole package of artistic gifts and in abundance.

The duo Cecil Taylor and Tony Oxley is an ultimate unison and the most unifying musical characteristic as they play is if they are one person. Oxley understands the complicated music, the dynamics, and the aspects of form Taylor constructs.

Cecil Taylor and Tony Oxley create an enormous palette of textures that can converge on the listeners and performers as a full wall of sound exploring an outstanding range of material. The scope of conception, plus the diversity and deep of Taylor and Oxley’s approach to playing, has contributed to cultivate an extremely multifaceted performance style exploring an array of musical intensities.

This duo confronts improvisation as a simultaneous emergence of attention and intention aiming to reach the challenge of a chamber music quintessence form accentuating possibilities to showcase accurate dialogues of voices. Piano, percussion, electronic, poetry and dance tandems challenge each other with the combination. “Shades of Jazz on Noir” is a montage of gangster molls and fallen women from the classic noir tradition. During the film, the Freak Lip Kill Sextet will improvise music providing drama, pathos, and romance.
Shades of Jazz on Noir literally reframes iconic/fatal women with the montage, the modern voice-over and the music.
Instead of the classic soundtrack- a very modern accompaniment by the Freak Lip Kill Sextet with amazing avant-garde artists: Herb Robertson, Angelica Sanchez, Tanya Kalmanovitch, Tony Malaby, Ratzo Harris, and Jay Rosen. The marriage of film and music plays both with and against the genre.

Thu April 30 / 2009 (8PM)

Douglass Street Music Collective presents Shades of Jazz on Noir a film and live music show. The film is a mix of 38 different noir films, from the 1930s to the 1950s, created by Ana Isabel Ordonez. Shades of Jazz on Noir features an archetypal femme fatale, given voice by Yoon Sun Choi. The mostly silent screening will be sultry, treacherous and accompanied by live music improvised by the sextet of Herb Robertson piccolo trumpet, trombone, flute and Angelica Sanchez piano, with  Ralph Alessi trumpet; Elliot Levin saxophones;  David Chevan bass and Ed Ricart guitar . The result is a compelling new piece, with the evocative gritty atmospherics of film noir joined by the energy of new jazz improvisation, which was often lacking in the original noir films.

Film by Ana Isabel Ordonez
Narrated by Yoon Sun Choi
Performed by Ramon Lopez Freak Lip Kill Band with Joe Fonda & Michael Musillami

24th March 8pm Cervantes Instiuto Krakow
25th March 8pm Cervantes Instituto Warsaw

This silent documentary film teases the gloomy aural and visual experience which emerged during the prosperous days of Hollywood’s silent films. Ordonez’s project shows that music performed live by Contemporary musicians is a perfect fit with the genre of film noir, which was popular in Hollywood during … (more)the 1940’s and 1950’s. This documentary offers a deeper look at the dark, parodies, crimes and femme-fatale image. The work is able to show that visual images and Contemporary music can give people goose-bumps when paired.

A unique sensory experience for enthusiasts of film, jazz, and new music

Length: 60 mins

“Shades of Jazz on Noir” film combines the passion and despondency of classic film noir with the texture and dynamism of live modern jazz improvisation, resulting in a unique sensory experience for enthusiasts of film, jazz, and new music.

The emotional path required to improvise complements film noir’s crude and joyful reality in a unique and little-used way, creating the music of film noir as it could have been. Shades of Jazz on Noir, shows the antagonistic character of film noir, which is the femme fatale. The film’s story arc, voiceover, and musical accompaniment portray film noir’s sultry, treacherous, and iconic leading women.
